“I am actively engaged in ovarian cancer research with Dr. Animesh Barua, Rush University Medical Center and also the liaison for Buck Hales’ ovarian cancer work Our work is currently funded by Department of Defense. We just were awarded another grant. We are looking for markers of early detection ovarian cancer and then also examining dietary influences on ovarian cancer.”

Nutrition

The importance of food intake to our survival necessitates the contribution of multiple systems in controlling energy homeostasis. Our lab investigates how nutrients interact with the gastrointestinal tract to change overall physiology and behavior as measured by alterations in absorption, hormonal and neural signaling. Our research is driven by the idea that there are differences in these physiological factors between lean and obese individuals and in trying to find the most efficient route by which to manipulate these systems in order to achieve decreases in appetite and improvements in metabolic disorders.

Fertilization

“The Miller lab studies the cell adhesion and signaling mechanisms of fertilization. This process is complex and highly variable among different species. Beyond the satisfaction of understanding a basic and essential foundation of life, knowledge of these processes could prove useful. The ability to improve fertility of farm animals, endangered species and humans and the technology to control fertility depend on knowledge about fertilization.”

Aging

“My laboratory is studying how estrogens influence brain function and how this influences changes during aging and after brain injury. We use several cellular and molecular methods to attack these questions.”

“At Illinois, Dr. Wise is continuing her research in issues concerning women’s health and gender-based biology. She has been particularly interested in whether hormones influence brains of women and men during development, during adulthood and during aging.”
