Dr. Dongwan Yoo gives seminar at Beijing Institute

Dr. Dongwan Yoo gives seminar at Beijing InstituteDongwan Yoo, professor of pathobiology, was welcomed in December to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, part of the Beijing Institute, as an internationally renowned expert on molecular virology and modern vaccinology, with particular emphasis on the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV).

In China, Dr. Yoo gave a talk entitled "Modulation of Interferon Response by PRRSV."

More than 50 students and wide range of teachers gained a more in-depth understanding of nucleoprotein and nonstructural protein Nsp1, the regulatory mechanism of host cell function, and immune evasion mechanisms. The seminar also included reports from the Institute of Zoology at the Ministry of Agriculture Veterinary Diagnostic Center, China Agricultural University, Beijing Academy of Agriculture.

After his talk, Dr. Yoo spent time visiting the laboratory of Professor Li Gang to collaborate on research and postgraduate training.

Dr. Yoo's training is unusual in that it has taken place in both human medical and veterinary settings. He studied veterinary medicine at Seoul National University, Korea. He completed his Master of Science degree in microbiology at the same institution and moved to Canada for further studies in virology at the medical school in the University of Ottawa. His doctoral advisor, Dr. C. Y. Kang, was a virologist trained in the laboratory of Dr. H. Temin, who received the Nobel Prize for the 'provirus' hypothesis, which led to the discovery of reverse transcriptase.
