Prospective Graduate Students

Dr. Ruiz is currently accepting students through the Department of Pathobiology and the Program in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology (PEEC).

Please contact me to discuss your research interests if you plan to apply. Research and Teaching Assistantships are usually available for well-qualified students. Students are encouraged to explore the fellowship and funding opportunities available to them.

The Department of Pathobiology offers MS and PhD degrees in Epidemiology. To apply to the Pathobiology Department, go to the Application Information page.

The PEEC program is interdisciplinary and is a good fit for you if you have a background in ecology and want to apply ecological theories and methods to research on the ecology of disease transmission. If you are admitted to that program, your department would be the School of Integrative Biology, but Dr. Ruiz would serve as your advisor.

DVM and DVM/MPH Students

Dr. Ruiz has often mentored students in the Summer Research Training Program for Veterinary Students. Students work on a 10-week research program during the summer. Past student projects have included:

  • Spatial Analysis of Equine West Nile Virus Case Rates by County in Illinois in 2002 and Comparison with Land Cover
  • Epidemiology of Fresh Produce in Champaign County, IL
  • Estimates of West Nile Virus Exposure Risk in Suburban, Chicago, IL, Based on Human Distribution and Mosquito Infection Rates
  • Internal Biological Characteristics of Catch Basins and Vector Mosquito Productivity

DVM/MPH students who want to carry out a capstone project with Dr. Ruiz should contact her and discuss possible projects.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students interested in a research project related to the geographic aspects of health can sign up for independent study credit. See the GISSA Research Page of the website to learn about ongoing projects. There is often an opportunity to do a small project in the context of other work, or you may develop your own project.
