Internal Medicine

You may be asking "What is ‘internal’ medicine? Isn't all medicine internal?

Well, internal medicine is pretty much the medicine that doesn't take place in a surgical suite.

Internists focus on how to: diagnose, treat, and, manage the metabolic disease that occurs in animals

The branches of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine include:

Small Animal Internal Medicine, Large Animal Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology, and Oncology.

Among the diagnostic procedures that internists perform are:

endoscopy (taking pictures of the intestines), echocardiography (taking ultrasound images of the heart),
blood chemistry analysis, and cerebral spinal taps.
