Cytology for Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians

This course will help you improve your in-house cytology through a review of cytology techniques, basic cellular identification, and interpretation of inflammatory and neoplastic lesions. By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Develop more comfort using a microscope
  • Determine if you have obtained a diagnostic sample
  • Recognize common processes and distinguish different types of inflammation
  • Diagnose common neoplasms


  Lecture 1 Introduction to cytology: Getting a good sample and recognizing artifacts
  Lecture 2 Introduction to cytology: Basic cell types
  Lecture 3 Common cutaneous lesions
  Lecture 4 A review of cytology cases
    The laboratory will involve microscopic evaluation of cytology cases. Each case will include a brief history, signalment and additional diagnostics. Participants will review the glass slides for each case. All cases will be reviewed at the end of the laboratory. Participants will receive a CD containing images from each cytology case to review after the conclusion of the course.

Lectures will be held from 9:00 am-Noon and 1:00-2:00 pm.
Laboratories will be held from 2:00-5:00 pm.
