Pet U: Knowledge to Promote Your Pet's Health

URBANA - Are you preparing for a furry, four-legged addition to your family? Or wondering what you can do to promote healthy habits for your pets between veterinary visits?

Pet U, coordinated by the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois and the Companion Animal Resource and Education (CARE) Center, has the answers. Pet U is a series of classes offering practical information about the daily care of your companion animal.

Taught by the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital faculty or staff, area veterinarians, or experts in the subject matter, the various classes teach different ways to make your pet feel happy and healthy. Topics range from promoting good litter box habits to learning fun exercises to do with your pets, maintaining your pet's health during the winter, and more.

The first of the series, entitled "Arthritic Pets," takes place on October 12. It will give owners exercise tips for pets of any age from rehabilitation specialist Kimberly Knap of the College of Veterinary Medicine's Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Issues occurring in puppies and kittens may contribute to arthritis problems later in their lives, says Knap. Although arthritis cannot be prevented, many therapies can help maintain your pet's overall quality of life.

A complete list of classes and schedules can be found online at: vetmed.illinois.edu/ope/petu/.

Class sessions are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the second Monday of each month and are held at the Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, located at 1008 W. Hazelwood Drive in Urbana.

Registration is $13 per class. Receive a $5 discount by registering two weeks in advance. To register please call the Office of Public Engagement at (217) 333-2907, or register online at vetmed.illinois.edu/ope/petu/.
