Dean, Students from Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Hold National Veterinary Posts

URBANA -- Dr. Herbert Whiteley, dean of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr. Elysia Schaefer, equine surgery resident at the College's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, were elected to leadership positions in the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) at its 144th Annual Convention, held in Washington, D.C., in July.

Dean Whiteley was elected by the House of Delegates to a six-year term on the AVMA Council on Education. He will represent veterinary medical research.

Dr. Schaefer was elected to an unexpired term (ending in 2010) representing recent graduates on the Council on Veterinary Service. Dr. Schaefer had served as the president of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) in 2004-05.

The current SAVMA Executive Committee includes two veterinary students from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine: Emily Eaton, president-elect, and Rachel Shaff, secretary.

The AVMA and its more than 75,000 member veterinarians are engaged in a wide variety of activities dedicated to advancing the science and art of animal, human, and public health. Visit the AVMA Web site at www.avma.org for more information.
