Lync @ Vet Med FAQ

This FAQ contains information regarding Microsoft Lync at the College of Veterinary Medicine.


1. Who will have access to Lync on Monday, January 9?
2. What if I do not currently have a phone number, or I am a graduate or professional student?

1. Who will have access to Lync on Monday, January 9?^
Faculty and Staff that have existing phone numbers.

2. What if I do not currently have a phone number, or I am a graduate or professional student?^
Your Lync account is not being activated at this time. When your account is eligible for activation, we will provide you with instructions on how to complete the request.

3. Is my traditional phone being turned off?^
Not at this time. You will still be able to use your current phone to make and receive phone calls.

4. Where can I find the Lync software?^
Lync has been installed automatically on the majority of Windows office area computers; this can be found by navigating to Start > All Programs > Microsoft Lync. Apple computers have Lync manually installed by a member of Computing Services. Service area computers in the Teaching Hospital and lab computers in BSB have not had the software installed. If you need Lync on your computer, please contact Computing Services (217-333-1533, net@vetmed.illinois.edu)

5. What if I do not have a UC device (headset/USB desk phone) for use with Lync yet?^
Continue to use your traditional phone to make and receive phone calls.

6. Who is assisting me with the purchase of a UC device?^
Please contact your departmental office for help with purchasing a UC device. If you are unsure who to speak to, Computing Services can direct you to the appropriate person(s).

7. What if I use Lync to call someone who is also on Lync, but they do not have a UC device yet?^
The person lacking a device will not be able to take your call. In this case, please use your traditional phone to make this phone call.

8. How do I sign into Lync once I'm activated?^
To sign into Lync:

1. On the “Sign-in address” field, enter your email address (e.g. NetID@illinois.edu), then click “Sign In”
2. After a short wait, you will be asked for your username. Enter this as: uofi\NetID
3. Enter your Campus AD (Exchange 2010 email) password, then click “Sign In”

Note: If you do not have a USB headset, handset or other microphone/speaker device for use with Lync, you will be limited to using the instant messaging function of Lync.

9. How do I know if I'm activated to use Lync?^
To check your Lync activation status, please visit the following web page and sign in with your NetID and Campus AD (Exchange email) password:

Once logged in, you will see a category near the top that tells your Lync activation status.

10. Are there Lync training manuals available?^
