New Vet Med IM Service

NEW VET MED IM SERVICE *** RETIRED in 2009 when Illinois Chat released ***

Computing Services has installed a College-wide Instant Messaging server. You are invited to try it out and explore how IM can be useful for your work. Instructions for getting started are below.

CONNECTING TO THE CVM INSTANT MESSAGING (IM) SERVER

CVM is running a Jabber IM server which uses a standards based protocol called XMPP for instant messaging. You will need a Jabber compliant IM client to talk to it. There are many Jabber clients that will also talk to many of the other popular IM services such as AIM, MSN and Yahoo. We recommend Pidgin (http://www.pidgin.im/).
Your AIM, MSN or Yahoo client will also work with Jabber.

1) (Windows) Download and install Pidgin http://pidgin.im/download/windows/.
(Mac) Download and install Adium http://www.adiumx.com/

2) When you start Pidgin or Adium, you will be asked to add an account. This process connects you to the IM server. Use the following settings.

(Windows) CONFIGURATION FOR PIDGIN:
Protocol: XMPP
Screeen Name: Your Netid (eg, cflowers)
Domain: jabber.cvm.uiuc.edu
Password: Use your CVM-AD password.

(Mac) CONFIGURATION FOR ADIUM:
Service: Jabber
Screen name: NetID@jabber.cvm.uiuc.edu (eg, cflowers@jabber.cvm.uiuc.edu)
Password: Use your CVM-AD password.

3) You're ready to IM! At this point you may see other members of your unit and some indication of their availability.

4) ADDING IM BUDDIES IN PIDGIN:
To find and add a chat buddy, use the ACCOUNTS menu, highlight your account and choose SEARCH FOR USERS. Use the default search directory. The search function uses the first name. Use an asterick
(*) for a wildcard. For example, to find Craig Flowers, search for "craig" or "*flowers". You can add a person to your buddy list directly from the search result window.

ADDING IM BUDDIES IN ADIUM
As far as I can tell, you have to know the person's screen name in ordeer to add them to your buddy list. Select CONTACT -> ADD CONTACT. In the "Jabber ID" field enter xxx@jabber.cvm.uiuc.edu where xxx is replaced by the person's NetID.
