MAY 2011 EDITION

FROM THE DEAN

On May 15, our largest graduating class to date--115 members--received their diplomas while a packed house watched and cheered. Talking with these soon-to-be veterinarians and their families always reinvigorates my pride in our program and the faculty, staff, and students who make it great. Here’s to the Class of 2011: whether you work with pigs or Pekingese, in California, New York, or points between or beyond, we respect you for the commitment you showed in earning the DVM degree, and we anticipate great things from you in the future.--Herb

SPOTLIGHT ON THE TEACHING HOSPITAL

Good HumanThere is no 9-1-1 for animals. When emergencies happen, what's an owner to do?

To help animal owners be prepared to act when an animal needs urgent care, the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital has launched a pre-registration program designed to provide peace of mind.

The Good Human Emergency Pre-Registration Program facilitates emergency visits to the hospital’s ER, which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has the area’s most extensive capabilities and resources to treat animals.

By registering before a problem arises, owners can avoid the additional stress of completing paperwork during an already stressful emergency visit.

When it comes to handling after-hours emergencies, there's good news for referring veterinarians too. The Mind the Gap Emergency Program is designed to expedite emergency care and communication of information about the ER visit.

By registering their practice online, referring veterinarians can specify the means by which they receive consistent, timely communication and their preferences for follow-up of ER patients. They will also be included on the client pre-registration website and will receive free customized informational materials for their clients, so clients connect emergency preparedness with their primary veterinarian.
