Illinois Vet News

JANUARY 2012 EDITION

FROM THE DEAN

The clock starts October 1, and from there, it’s about a 10-month journey, every year, to arrive at the final make-up of the next incoming class of veterinary students.

Illinois received 955 applications last fall. After all were reviewed to ensure that they were complete and met the baseline academic criteria, 459 applications moved forward for review by members of our admissions advisory committee. Three reviewers who had not seen the grades and GRE scores evaluated each application on non-academic merit, and this evaluation determined the 337 applicants who have been invited for a personal interview, which will take place February 13.

The final half of the journey to admission at Illinois plays out over the spring and summer as admitted students elect to join the 120 students in the Class of 2016.

Of course, the admissions cycle is just one leg of the much longer journey toward becoming a veterinarian, a journey that may begin in childhood and last a lifetime. As we look forward to hosting prospective students and interview team members on February 13, I take this opportunity to salute all of you who participate in the making of veterinarians: mentors, teachers, clients, and colleagues.--Herb
