IN THE JANUARY 2008 ISSUE:

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Rose BowlFor me, 2008 started off orange. And I mean ORANGE. Everywhere we went in California, that color was a testament to the indomitable Illinois spirit. The excitement of a high-profile bowl game gives the multitude of fans a reason to show off their team loyalty.

It was extremely satisfying to share the Rose Bowl experience with many of our graduates and supporters. We capitalized on the bowl berth by arranging a reception on the Sunday before the game and also hooked up with College friends at the game. Given the short notice, I know we must have missed seeing some of you who made the trek to Pasadena. (Next time Illinois goes to a bowl game, be sure to check the College Web site or call to find out how to get to our event!)

In the mean time, the buzz generated at the Rose Bowl continues, despite the loss of the game. I know Illinois fans with a connection to veterinary medicine are rooting for the success of the College with as much fervor as they bring to athletics. And there are many ways to support the vet med team.

The Brilliant Futures campaign provides an opportunity to assist our College in achieving its top goals: providing an excellent DVM program, translating research findings into applications for health, serving Chicago, improving our facilities, and improving public health.

Please send me a note at dean@cvm.uiuc.edu or contact our assistant dean for advancement, Brenda Betts, at 217/333-5545 to discuss how your Illinois pride can make a difference for our College. Let's make the Brilliant Futures campaign the granddaddy of them all!--Herb

FROM THE TEACHING HOSPITAL: Spotlight on Dr. Olivier Dossin

Dr. Olivier DossinOlivier Dossin received his veterinary medicine degree from the Veterinary School of Toulouse in southern France. He earned a master’s of science from the Faculte de Medecine Paris VII University and a PhD in pharmacology at Toulouse III University. He is a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Prior to coming to Illinois, he was a faculty member in the Veterinary School of Toulouse, where he focused primarily on clinical practice and teaching. His close interactions with practitioners through his continuing education teaching provided invaluable feedback for his own teaching and research.

His research has focused on canine inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis and management, helicobacter infection and its role in gastritis in dogs, and liver enzyme pharmacokinetics. He looks forward to working with students, interns, and residents and hopes to develop a program in applied GI research in cats and dogs.

Dr. Dossin is available for small animal internal medicine consultations and can be reached through the small animal medicine clinical coordinator at 244-1201.
