IN THE APRIL 2008 ISSUE:

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

This month for the first time, the College of Veterinary Medicine is asking faculty and staff members to make a gift in support of College programs.
Sandra Manfra Marretta

The "You Are Here" campaign, which kicked off this week, is part of the university-wide "Brilliant Futures" fund-raising initiative. For our college community, it means a chance for people to reflect on their connection to our mission and work and to contribute in another way.

Several who already donate, including Drs. Ann Johnson, Anne Barger, Sandy Manfra Marretta, and Wally Hoffmann, have shared their perspectives. You can read why they give and find out more information about the faculty-staff campaign on the Web at www.uiuc.edu/goto/urhere.

I invite everyone at the College to make a statement about why "you are here." And for our alumni and friends across the country, this is an opportunity to show your support and gratitude for the outstanding work done by our faculty and staff.

If you have any questions, please contact our advancement office at 217/333-2762 or send me an email at dean@cvm.uiuc.ecu.--Herb

Can Pet Turtles Be Made Safe?

Mark MitchellEarly this year the Centers for Disease Control reported an outbreak of salmonella poisoning stemming from contact with pet turtles. The outbreak affected over 100 people in 33 states, many of them children under the age of 10. Wildlife veterinarian Dr. Mark A. Mitchell believes the current outbreak has more to do with poor management than dirty – or dangerous – turtles. News for Referring Veterinarians

To ensure that the referral process goes smoothly, please use our referral data form when you are referring a patient. You can find it online at www.uiuc.edu/goto/referral. The completed form may be sent with the client or faxed to our Medical Records section at 217-244-9554 (small animal) or 217-333-9796 (large animal).

We also ask that you call the hospital to alert us to the referral (217-333-5311 for small animal patients, 217-333-2001 for large animal patients) and send the medical record and appropriate diagnostic images with your client as well.

This spring we will have a new referral directory available online. Look for an announcement in the mail.
