Project 1: Illinois Kids Development Study

A research partnership: Carle Foundation Hospital Research
and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Project 1: 10-11 months of age

Infants come to our research lab to watch two types of events in a puppet stage. In both events, an object emerges from behind the left and then the right side of a screen.  In the possible event (A), the objects are the same.  In the impossible event (B), the objects are different.  When the screen is lowered, a single object is revealed.

At this age, boys are typically surprised by the impossible event, whereas girls are not.

We want to see whether prenatal exposure to BPA or phthalates alters this sexually dimorphic pattern of responses.
