John Ciribassi, D.V.M., DACVB:

  • John Ciribassi, D.V.M., is a 1984 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Ciribassi now lives in the Chicago area and is owner of Chicagoland Veterinary Behavior Consultants. Dr.Ciribassi and his wife also own the Carol Stream Animal Hospital, a general veterinary practice in a Chicago suburb.
  • He has been involved with American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior since 1998 and became president-elect in 2004. He is involved with a program that qualifies individuals to sit for boards for the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. He is the behavior section moderator for NOAH, which is the American Veterinary Medical Association's web-based discussion listserv.

Sue Margulis, Ph.D.:

  • Dr. Sue Margulis received her Ph.D. in evolutionary biology from the University of Chicago in 1996. After six years at Brookfield Zoo as a behavioral research manager, Dr. Margulis came to Lincoln Park Zoo as Curator of Primates in 2004. She is a member of the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes, located in the Lincoln Park Zoo. Her research is in applied animal behavior, and she has taught research in animal behavior at the University of Chicago since 2001.
  • Dr. Margulis is on the advisory board of EthoSource, the education committee of the Animal Behavior Society, and serves on the Behavior Advisory Group of American Zoo and Aquarium Association. She is the behavior adviser for the Ape Taxon Advisory Group as well as the Research Advisor to the AZA Gibbon Species Survival Plan (SSP). Dr. Margulis is also part of the Management Group of the Gorilla SSP.

Owen Slater, D.V.M.:

  • Owen Slater, D.V.M., received his post-secondary education from the University of Guelph, where he completed degrees in ecology and veterinary medicine. Prior to coming to Lincoln Park Zoo, he worked for the Calgary Zoo in Alberta, Canada and as a mixed-animal veterinarian in rural Alberta.
  • His past wildlife experiences include conducting West Nile virus surveillance testing for the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre and volunteering for a Jane Goodall Institute chimpanzee sanctuary in Uganda, where he coordinated the first annual Pan African Sanctuary Alliance Healthcare Workshop in addition to providing veterinary assistance to the chimpanzees. He received a grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge foundation to conduct a pilot research project on antimicrobial resistance in mountain gorillas living in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, and he is currently conducting research on blood-borne parasites in free-ranging caribou in the Canadian Arctic.

Kirk Manson, M.A.:

  • Kirk Manson, M.A., just completed his masters under Dr. Sue Margulis at the University of Chicago.

Kenneth Welle, D.V.M.:

  • Dr. Ken Welle studied Animal Science at the University of Illinois and graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. In 1991, Dr. Welle joined the veterinary college as an assistant professor, teaching avian, exotic, and wildlife medicine.
  • In 1992, he opened All Creatures Animal Hospital. Dr. Ken became the first veterinarian practicing in Illinois to become board certified in avian medicine. He is a member (and currently treasurer) of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians, and the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians.
  • Dr. Welle has presented at local and national veterinary conferences and has achieved his goal of creating an exceptional avian and exotic animal hospital for central Illinois. When not at work, you may run into Dr. Ken at some of the local races.
