  External Behavior Opportunities:

MSU: Animal Welfare Judging Contest

Nov 1-2, 2008 at Michigan State University

Michigan State University's Animal Behavior and AVMA's Animal Welfare Division would like to invite you to participate in their annual Animal Welfare Judging Contest.

Since 2002, the Animal Behavior and Welfare Group at Michigan State University has sponsored an annual Animal Welfare Intercollegiate Judging/Assessment Contest for undergraduate (primarily animal science) students. Veterinary students had their first opportunity to participate in March of 2008 and on November 1-2, 2008 veterinary students will have their second opportunity (we have moved the contest from spring to fall to better accommodate students' schedules).

The Animal Welfare Intercollegiate Judging/Assessment Contest is an educational tool for enhancing understanding and awareness of welfare issues affecting animals used for human purposes (e.g., research, agriculture, entertainment, companionship). During the contest, participants, in team and individual events, review live and/or computer-based presentations encompassing data, photographs, and videos of animals in comparable situations. Participants then use the information obtained to rank the welfare of the animals in those situations on the basis of physiologic and behavioral indicators, with attention to facilities and management, and present their analyses orally to expert judges. The contest teaches ethical reasoning, encourages objective assessment of animal welfare on the basis of scientific theory and data, promotes critical thinking, and improves your communication skills. In addition to the team and individual events, for which trophies are awarded, the organizing committee is seeking abstracts for posters and a limited number of verbal presentations on animal welfare-related topics of their choice.

As a way to help you participate in the November 2008 competition and to assist in removing related financial impediments, the AVMA is fortunate to be able to offer up to 20 travel grants (maximum of $500/student). Additional information about the contest, application forms, and contest rules are available on the AVMA Website at: http://www.avma.org/issues/animal_welfare/intercollegiate.asp Travel monies are available as a result of funds provided by GSK to the AVMA Animal Welfare Division.
