Tours
Tours of the College are available for those of high school age or older through the Office of Academic and Student Affairs (admissions@cvm.uiuc.edu; 217/333-1192). Student-led tours are conducted over the noon hour on Mondays and Thursdays. All guests must make an appointment. This policy applies to prospective applicants; former faculty, staff, and students; and the general public. We are unable to accommodate “walk-in” guests. Tours will not be available on University holidays and breaks or during exam periods.
Spring Semester -- Student-led tours resume the first week of February and end the first week in May. Tours will not be offered during Spring Break in March.
Summer—Student-led tours are available in June and July. Tours are not available in August due to new student Orientation and preparation for the Fall Semester.
Fall Semester—Student-led tours resume after Labor Day and end the first week in December. Tours will not be offered during the week of Thanksgiving.
Group Tours—High School and college level group tours are available in a limited number each semester and only Monday-Friday between 10:00-2:00. Group tours are not available on evenings or weekends. These tours provide information for groups of applicants, potential applicants, or those student groups interested in the field of Veterinary Medicine. Tours do not include visiting the Wildlife ward, research labs, or farms. For more information or to arrange tours, please email Amy Simons at aoboyle@illinois.edu as early as possible. Requests should include your name and contact information, group name, number of students (20 maximum), and preferred date and time. Unfortunately, not all requests can be accommodated due to our students’ rigorous schedules. Every effort will be made to provide early notification if it becomes necessary to cancel a tour.
Children’s groups, Middle and Elementary schools—Tours highlight our academic programs and are tailored to prospective students who are at least 15 years of age or older. Groups with younger students can contact our Veterinary Student Outreach Program (VSOP) for presentation information. Other educational sites near Champaign/Urbana include: Orpheum Children’s Science Museum, Staerkel Planetarium, Anita Purves Nature Center, Prairie Farm, Curtis Orchard, Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch, Scovill Zoo, Miller Park Zoo, Ecology and Action Center, Children’s Discovery Museum, and the Children’s Museum of Illinois.
Open House—Individuals under the age of 15 who are interested in tours should visit the College’s Open House, an annual event now held the first Sunday in October. Open House is a great opportunity to see the best of what the College has to offer and learn about the various careers associated with Veterinary Medicine. This event is free and open to the public. For more information visit: http://vetmed.illinois.edu.
Arrange for a Visit from our Student Outeach Program
The Veterinary Student Outreach Program (VSOP) is a student organization that enhances the relationship between the College of Veterinary Medicine and the community through educational programming and outreach activities. They can be contacted to provide or present "ready-made" programs for all ages or can tailor materials to meet your specific needs.
College of Veterinary Medicine Open House
This fall, attend our Open House to discover the behind-the-scenes side of veterinary medical education and practice. Equine lameness evaluations, mock surgery demonstrations, reptile health care exhibits, and a look inside a cow's rumen are some of the exhibits and activities available there. This is an excellent opportunity for people with an interest in veterinary medicine to observe our facilities and to learn about the service programs in veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois. Check the College Web site to confirm the date.
