Clinical Skills Learning Center
About the CSLC
The CSLC will also play an integral role in the comprehensive milestone examinations students will take in years two and three to determine how well they retain and integrate knowledge and skills. A substantial portion of these examinations will assess clinical competency.
Areas of Focus
- Restraint & Physical Examination
- Diagnostics
- Treatment
- Anesthesia
- Surgery
- Emergency & Critical Care (featuring extensive use of mannequins)
Staffing
The CSLC is staffed by veterinary technicians hired specifically to observe and coach students, as well as to handle stocking and upkeep of the CSLC. Other technicians from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, as well as house officers, faculty and experienced students, assist in teaching and assessing skills. The use of technician educators to teach technical skills enables faculty so spend more time focusing on students' non-technical skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving and communication. The CSLC has convenient hours during whichstudents can come and go. It may also be reserved for special teaching or assessment purposes.
Additional Uses of the CSLC
The CSLC will also provide a venue for educating technician students, continuing education of veterinary practitioners, and for research and development of innovative educational methods and tools.
