VETERINARY ACUPUNCTURE
Pantagraph (Bloomington, IL; Aug. 31) -- "Absolutely, there is a lot more interest in it," said Dr. Stuart Price, who teaches anesthesia and pain management at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Champaign. But he adds there need to be more controlled studies to determine what types of pain the therapy can best alleviate.

REINDEER CARE
News-Gazette (August 31) -- When a newborn at Hardy's Reindeer Farm had trouble nursing last May, she was quickly taken to the Large Animal Clinic, where she got care that pulled her through. Dr. Cliff Shipley was the doctor on the case.

SWINE INFECTIOUS DISEASE
New York Times (Aug. 16) -- A highly infectious swine virus is sweeping China's pig population, driving up pork prices and spawning fears of a global pandemic among domesticated pigs. "They haven't really explained what this virus is," said Federico Zuckermann, a professor of immunology at Illinois's College of Veterinary Medicine.

SWINE VACCINE
The PigSite.com (United Kingdom, Aug. 13) -- Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) is the most significant disease problem facing the swine industry worldwide. In June, researchers at U. of I.'s College of Veterinary Medicine convened a group of 22 national experts in PRRS, virology, immunology, and vaccinology to discuss the state of current knowledge about PRRS vaccination.

CANINE CANCER
News-Gazette (Champaign, Ill., Aug. 6) -- Slides representing 300 cancer cases will be under the microscope when more than a dozen veterinary pathology experts from Massachusetts to California assemble at the UI later this month. Dr. Ted Valli is organizing an effort that could make it easier to diagnose and treat canine lymphomas. "We really want to be able to manage (animal cancers) much more effectively," he said.

Reuters UK (July 25) -- Thomas Graves, a feline expert and chief of small animal medicine at the U. of I. College of Veterinary Medicine, said there is no evidence to suggest cats can sense death, but he doesn't discount it for a minute. "Those things are hard to study. I think probably dogs and cats can sense things we can't," Graves said.

DOG RECOVERS FROM SPINAL FRACTURE
(Herald & Review, Decatur, Ill, July 2 and July 18) - Mattie, a 2-1/2-year-old, brown, medium-size, Boxer-mix dog, was hit or knocked off a Decatur railroad trestle. After preliminary treatment at the Northgate Pet Clinic in Decatur, Mattie was taken to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Urbana. Mattie had a collapsed lung and underwent successful back surgery for a fractured disc.
