Alumni & Special Service Awards
The University of Illinois Veterinary Medical Alumni Association and the College of Veterinary Medicine are seeking nominations for the 2010 Dr. Erwin Small Distinguished Alumni Awards and the Special Service Award.
The Dr. Erwin Small Distinguished Alumni Awards acknowledge distinguished Illinois graduates (DVM, PhD, and MS degree holders) who have excelled in their respective fields and have made significant contributions to the profession and/or College, regardless of where they reside. These awards honor the late Dr. Erwin Small (IL ’57), professor emeritus and former associate dean of alumni and public affairs at the College. They are a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the advancement of veterinary medicine, specifically to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine at Urbana-Champaign.
The Special Service Award annually recognizes no more than one outstanding individual who has made significant contributions to the veterinary profession and/or the College of Veterinary Medicine. Non-veterinarians or veterinarians who hold degrees from an institution other than the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine are eligible for this award.
In respect to both awards, there are seven areas from which a candidate may be nominated. They include excellence in: 1) practice–clinical, diagnostic, public health, regulatory, military; 2) shelters or humane societies; 3) teaching; 4) research; 5) involvement in organized veterinary medicine; 6) human-animal bond; and 7) mentoring of future veterinarians. A nominee may be nominated in one or more of the areas.
Recipients will be honored at the Annual Fall Conference for Veterinarians scheduled for September 9-10 2010. The awards will be presented during a ceremony on Thursday evening at the College. While here on campus, recipients will be invited to interact with current veterinary students and/or special interest clubs and talk about their professional experiences since leaving their Alma Mater.
We are now soliciting nominations for consideration. Using the attached nomination forms, which includes guidelines and instructions, any individual or organization can submit a nomination. Completed forms with supportive materials should be submitted to the Dean’s Office no later than May 1, 20010.
We look forward to your thoughtful nominations. Please feel free to share this request with your colleagues. If you have questions regarding the nomination forms or selection process, please contact the Dean’s Office at 217/333-2760.
