MESSAGE FROM DEAN WHITELEY

April activities at the College put a spotlight on our professional and graduate student accomplishments.

On Saturday, more than 80 deserving veterinary students received awards and scholarships totaling over $220,000 dollars. A celebration luncheon for nearly 300, including student winners, their families, faculty members, and generous donors, acknowledged the vital role that visionary donors play in making a veterinary education possible for our students.

Friday was our annual Phi Zeta Research Day. Eighteen residents and graduate students gave scholarly presentations on a host of topics related to current faculty research interests: basic and applied aspects of orthopedic biology, infectious disease, oncology, and reproductive biology.

Just as our veterinary program has a growing number of scholarships, so our graduate program needs external support. The coming fund-raising campaign targets not only scholarships and fellowships for graduate students but also endowed chairs and professorships, which will provide faculty members with funds to enhance their labs and attract the best and brightest new scholars.

If you would like to learn more about supporting the research programs at the college, please call Brenda Betts at 217/333-2761 or contact me at dean@cvm.uiuc.edu. -- Herb

NEW ON THE WEB

* Bald Eagle Lands in Wildlife Medical Clinic
A bald eagle patient, one of perhaps five in the history of the Wildlife Medical Clinic, came in late last month. It is hoped that the wing fracture can be stabilized and this bird will find a permanent home in an animal exhibit. See http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/news/viewartcl.cfm?id=111 Her arrival was timely for calling attention to the outstanding efforts of the student volunteers in the Wildlife Medical Clinic, a program that plays an important role in veterinary education at the College. The clinic's annual fund-raiser, Doodle for Wildlife, takes place on April 21. Visit the Web site at www.cvm.uiuc.edu/wmc/ to reserve your seat, look over the celebrity doodles that will be up for auction, or simply show your support by making a donation today.

* Infectious Disease Conference Features Returning College Experts
Dr. Roberto Docampo, former scientific director of the University of Illinois Center for Zoonoses Research, returns to Urbana to speak at the Tenth Annual Conference on New & Reemerging Infectious Diseases, April 19 and 20. He is currently a Sanford Orkin Eminent Scholar at the University of Georgia's Department of Cellular Biology. Dr. Marta Guerra, a PhD graduate of the College now with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will give the conference's opening address, which is free and open to the public. Find out more at http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/idc/

* Industrial Tox/Path and Behavior Conferences This Summer
The Industrial Toxicology and Pathology Short Course will be held in Urbana on July 22 to 25. This course is designed for toxicologists and pathologists working in product development including pharmaceuticals, biologicals and chemicals. It address current global issues in the field and enhances attendees' skills in interpreting animal safety studies, interacting with federal regulatory agencies, and networking. See http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/ope/itp/index.html.

The behavior conference, "Keeping the Peace with Fluffy and Fido: New Pets, Reactive Pets, and Multiple-Pet Issues," is slated for August 3 and 4. This seminar for veterinary and shelter professionals will focus on the behavior and training challenges of introducing new pets into homes, working with dogs and cats in multiple pet households, and helping to prevent and solve behavior problems in reactive companion animals. See http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/ope/behavior/index.html.

FROM THE VETERINARY TEACHING HOSPITAL

* Equine MRI Debuts at Open House, on Local Media
Thousands of animal owners and other citizens recently got a first-hand look at the College's new MRI unit capable of imaging horse's heads, necks, and lower limbs. The newly equipped room was part of the Open House imaging exhibit on March 31 and local television and newspapers filmed an equine patient undergoing the procedure on April 6.
